Tripsacum dactyloides

Eastern gamagrass

Tripsacum dactyloides is a grass native across the southeast. It is naturally found predominantly in wet habitats. It grows best in full sun to part shade, and on soils that are moist to wet. This is a tall grass (it can grow up to eight feet), and it dies back in the winter. Leaving the dormant stems until spring provides necessary over-wintering habitat for pollinators. It has drooping orange or purple flowers that are attractive. Tripsacum dactyloides works great for restoration projects, or as a specimen grass in a yard.
