Taxodium distichum

Bald cypress

Taxodium distichum is a tree native to the southeast, predominantly in the coastal plain but also extending inland. It is naturally found in wetland areas, and prefers to be cultivated in wet soil but can tolerate occasional dryness. It grows best in full sun. This is one of our deciduous conifers, and the small needle-like leaves turn a showy orange color in autumn before falling. Cones mature in the fall and attract birds of all sizes. Taxodium distichum works well as a specimen tree, or for use in restoration and mitigation projects.
