Sorghastrum nutans

Indian grass

Sorghastrum nutans is a grass native across the southeast. It is primarily found in dry to moist conditions. It grows well in full sun or part shade. It can withstand drought. It produces attractive golden seed heads in the late summer that mature into orangish red seeds in the winter. The seeds are enjoyed by birds, and it provides excellent cover to small animals. It can grow up to six feet tall, and dies back in the winter. Sorghastrum nutans is excellent as a specimen plant in a yard or for restoration projects.
