Nyssa sylvatica

Black gum

Nyssa sylvatica is a native tree that occurs throughout the southeast. It is found naturally in dry to moist upland forests. It can grow in a wide array of soil conditions and tolerates drought (although not flooding). It does best in full sun to part shade. The flowers bloom in the early spring and are much enjoyed by pollinators. Dark blue fruits are produced in the fall and attract birds and small mammals. This tree has beautiful red fall foliage. Nyssa sylvatica works well as a street or yard tree, or for use in restoration plantings.
