Lindera benzoin

Spice bush

Lindera benzoin is a native shrub common across the southeast. It grows well in a variety of soil conditions and can tolerate occasional flood or drought. It does best in part shade. The leaves and stem of this plant produce a spicy aroma, and almost every part of the plant is edible (hence the common name Spice bush). Small flowers bloom in early spring and attract many pollinators, and the small bright red fruits that appear in the late summer are popular among songbirds. Lindera benzoin is also a host plant for several native butterflies. This shrub works well as a specimen in a rain garden, or for restoration plantings.
