Leucothoe axillaris

Coastal doghobble

Leucothoe axillaris is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal plain of the southeast, where it is predominantly found in wetland habitats. It grows best in moist to wet soils, in part shade to full sun (if soils are kept wet). Clusters of drooping, bell-shaped flowers bloom in the spring and attract pollinators. It can grow up to four feet tall, and provides good cover for wildlife. Leucothoe axillaris is excellent for restoration projects, as a native screen, or a specimen plant in yards or rain gardens.
