Diospyros virginiana

Persimmon

Diospyros virginiana is a fruit tree native across the southeast. It is naturally found in dry-moist forests, edge habitats, and along roadsides. It is also commonly cultivated in urban areas. It is known for the fruits it produces in fall (persimmons), which are enjoyed by humans and wildlife alike. It is also a host plant for several moth species. Diospyros virginiana is cultivated best in moist soil but is tolerant of drought, and grows in full sun to part shade. It is a great plant for restoration projects, as well as a street tree.
