Carya ovata

Shagbark hickory

Carya ovata is a large tree native to eastern North America, though largely absent in the southernmost coastal plain. It grows well in rich, well-drained soils and is drought tolerant once established. Mature trees have shaggy bark (hence the common name Shagbark hickory). This tree produces nuts in the fall that are popular food for wildlife of all shapes and sizes (including humans), and it is a host for several native butterflies and moths. Carya ovata works well for restoration projects.
