Baptisia albescens

Spiked wild indigo

Baptisia albescens is a flowering plant native to the southeast, where it is found in dry woodlands and roadsides. It grows best in full sun to part shade areas that have dry to moist soils. It is drought tolerant and fairly deer resistant. The foliage of this plant is full and bushy, and generally grows up to three feet each season. It dies back completely in the winter. Leaving dormant stems until spring provides necessary over-wintering habitat for pollinators. Tall stalks full of white flowers bloom in the summer and attract many pollinators. Large seed pods mature in fall and provide winter interest. This is a host plant for several native butterfly species. Baptisia albescens is an excellent specimen plant.
