Aronia arbutifolia

Red chokeberry

Aronia arbutifolia is a shrub native to the southeast. It is naturally found in wetland habitats, and prefers to be grown in wet soils but can tolerate average soils as well. In the spring it produces white radial flowers that are characteristic of the rose family. The flowers turn into red berries as the season progresses, and occasionally persist into winter. This plant tends to sucker and produce colonies. This suckering ability makes it work great for stream restoration projects, while its showy blossoms and berries make it excellent in a yard or rain garden. The flowers of Aronia arbutifolia attract many pollinators in the spring, and the berries that come later draw in small mammals and song birds.
