Alnus serrulata

Tag alder

Alnus serrulata is a small tree broadly native to the southeast. It is primarily found in wetland habitats, and does best in wet soils. It produces two different types of cones in the fall that persist through the winter. Alnus serrulata does well for restoration projects or wetland mitigation. It is a host for the Harvester butterfly, and birds and small mammals eat the catkins in the spring.
