Acer negundo

Box elder

Acer negundo is a tree native to a wide range of the southeast. It is predominantly found along streams and rivers, and prefers to grow in moist soils. It does best in full sun to part shade. The early spring flowers of this tree attract pollinators, and birds are drawn to the fruits it produces in the fall. This is a host plant for a few native butterfly species. The leaves of this tree somewhat resemble those on poison ivy, but it is easily differentiated since it is a tree and poison ivy is a vine (and the leaves of Acer negundo do not cause any allergic reaction in humans). Acer negundo is excellent for restoration projects or erosion control.
